What the study found
Wang and colleagues report UV disinfection powered by a hand crank or pedal. Laboratory batch results and a cost estimate provide a starting point for assessing local water quality, user effort, maintenance and safe storage.
The study reports treating two liters in 25 minutes by hand cranking, or ten liters in 15 minutes with the pedal configuration. The authors estimate a levelized cost of $8.57 per person per year, using the model described in the paper. Read the study.
